Saudi Arabia has restored the long-neglected two-story house in Yanbu where British officer Thomas Edward “Lawrence of Arabia” stayed during the early stages of the Great Arab Revolt in 1916. The property, once in ruins and surrounded by local rumours of being haunted, has been renovated under the Saudi tourism ministry’s heritage programme and is being prepared for public visiting. Lawrence, an intelligence officer and advisor to Arab forces against the Ottoman Empire in World War I, used the Yanbu port as a strategic base during the campaign. The restoration marks a notable addition to Saudi Arabia’s growing portfolio of culturally significant tourist attractions along the Red Sea.
